Maternity Benefit Act

The Maternity Benefit Act was enacted in the year 1961 to protect the employment of women during the time of their maternity. According to this Act, women working in every establishment and sector are entitled to receive a 'maternity benefit' which comprises fully paid absence from work for a certain time before and after childbirth. The period stretches up to a maximum of 12 weeks or 84 Days. An amendment to this Act was brought about by the Maternity (Amendment) Bill 2017 passed by the Rajya Sabha.
